Saturday 22 January Edwin Stolk organized the action/happening "A LIFE CHANGING EXPERIENCE" at 3 pm at the entrance of De Appel. He invited people to create together a queue from the pay desk inside De Appel, to the sidewalk outside. Between 3 pm till 3.30 pm nobody entered he museum, after that everybody went his/her own way [flash mob]. The happening is a reaction on governmental ideas that visitor ratings are going to decide if a museum is important. In the same time the happening created a lived connection between the art institute and the public space. Art, art institute, connected by a lived art experience with the public opinion over art by a large part of a potential audience. The call was, tell everybody about the happening and join the queue. Because everybody knows, an action like this only has its effect when a lot of people participate!

I proposed the director from 'De Appel', Ann Demeester to realize the situation; A LIFE CHANGING EXPERIENCE, which will consist out of a 'copy' of the queue of the first opening on this location 12 February 2010 at 'de Appel Boys School', Eerste Jacob van Campenstraat 59, Amsterdam, Netherlands.

CONCEPT:

12 February 2010 is a memorable day, the first opening at 'de Appel Boys School', Eerste Jacob van Campenstraat 59 is a fact. The exhibition "For the blind man in the dark room looking for the black cat that isn't there" attracts a lot of visitors. People waiting in a queue outside to see the show.

We live in times where targets play a huge role; great attention means credibility. The numbers prove the role of importance and create the environment we are surrounded with. The numbers decide what is important and what not. The arts are in heavy weather at the moment in a right political environment; recently protest sounds fill the streets not only in the Netherlands. More than ever, is my opinion, there is a need to redefine the role of art.

As a situationist I feel a great urge to infiltrate, instead of segregation. The world is a stage. It's all about act and react within temporary situations, happenings and actions. It's no longer about fixed ideas, but about flexible ambiguous movements. The approach always starts from a lived connection with certain systems and structures, analysing them critically. The society of the spectacle written by Guy Debord is still very accurate these days, as a contemporary warrior it's my aim to restore a lived connection in a radical way.

Situation: "A LIFE CHANGING EXPERIENCE" will be a situation made by you, me, and everybody who feels the urge. I want that particular Saturday 22 January 2011, during the exhibition by Valérie Mannaerts, to generate the 'same' line of people in front of 'de Appel Boys School' as that particular Friday 12 February 2010. What I am planning to do is to create together a queue from the pay desk inside De Appel, to the sidewalk outside. From 15.00hrs till 15.30hrs we will not enter. We will generate through this situation a lived connection and fill the gap between us and them. This will be an act to redefine the role of arts, on one side it will question the role of an art institute and on the other side it will question the public opinion about art. In the mean time it is a direct response on the contemporary political ideas that large amounts of visitors decide the level of importance and thereby its existence.
